Story of a young woman who marries a fascinating widower only to find out that she must live in the shadow of his former wife, Rebecca, who died mysteriously several years earlier. The young wife must come to grips with the terrible secret of her handsome, cold husband, Max De Winter (Laurence Olivier). She must also deal with the jealous, obsessed Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), the housekeeper, who will not accept her as the mistress of the house.

Don't go to Rebecca thinking you will see some sort of horror or freak movie. It is not a Frankenstein, but an intensely dramatic piece with all the suspense and emotional appeal you could cram into one movie.

One might have thought that when blackmail and murder were out Hitchcock's feeling for quick explosive action would show itself. Oddly enough he seems instead to lose interest. Perhaps the exquisite silliness of the story was too much for him.

Hitchcock hits a stride a little late. Too long. If I was the Mrs, I’d have thrown hands at Danvers. Glad Favell caught one on the chin.

Just finished reading the book then watched this classic movie. The film does a great job of staying true to the novel, with a few tweaks to condense some of the scenes. As with most films of the time, melodramatic. When reading the book, I assumed under Hitchcock’s direction, the movie might come across as a little more creepy, esp Danver’s character. But wasn’t too bad imo. Maybe to appeal to audiences of the time.

Enjoyed the style and direction and it's loaded with great performances. Unfortunately, I had real problem believing and watching the central performance but it didn't detract too much from the fun, twisty last 30 minutes.
